UK TREE OF THE YEAR 2026
TODAY’S TOUR STOP — NEWCASTLE, COUNTY DOWN!
Today Belfast Causeway Tours is in beautiful Newcastle, County Down, where our guests stopped to see a rather unusual local landmark — this incredible windswept tree!
Standing close to the seafront and shaped by years of exposure to the strong coastal winds coming off the Irish Sea, the tree has developed its remarkable bent and almost horizontal shape. It’s easy to see why it has become such a familiar and much-loved sight in Newcastle.
And now it has been recognised as UK Tree of the Year 2026!
The annual Tree of the Year competition isn’t simply about finding the biggest or oldest tree. It celebrates trees with character, history and a special connection to their
local community — and Newcastle’s distinctive windswept tree certainly has character!
With the Mourne Mountains sweeping down towards the sea, Newcastle is already one of our favourite places to show visitors. Little discoveries like this are exactly why we love taking our guests beyond the usual tourist trail.
Our guests got the chance to stop, have a closer look and capture a few photographs today.
